Telefónica tries to scam its own clients in a desperate bid to keep them

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Two months ago we happily announced that the days are numbered for Telefonica’s monopoly in Spain.

But it seems that Telefónica will stop at nothing to try and desperately hang on to its clients – not even outright deceit. So we want to make sure that you are all aware of the latest trick to watch out for, because it’s a big one!

Telefónica are sending letters out to their landline subscribers, asking them to fill out and return an attached form. (Click on the images below to see samples of the letter and form).

The first time you read the actual letter in Spanish, it sounds like Telefónica are asking for your written consent to allow other operators (like Direct Telecom) to handle your call traffic. But read it a few more times and especially look at the small print on the form and it’s a whole other story!

What Telefónica actually want is your consent for them to cancel any preselection or low-cost call routing to other operators, so they can make all your calls go through their own system. But this intention is cleverly disguised until you get to the following text in the form that you have to sign:

“Solicito que procedan a inhabilitar total o parcialmente la preasignación del/de los numero/s arriba relacionado/s, para realizar, por defecto, estas llamadas con Telefónica de España S.A.U.”

Which translates to:

“I request that you proceed to totally or partially disable the preselection facility on the number(s) above, to route all calls through Telefónica de Espana S.A.U. by default.”

It is very possible that these forms, once signed, will actually be further used by Telefónica to prevent or hinder their clients from being able to sign up with competing Low Cost Call companies at all! If you have ever faced the incredible red tape and delaying tactics you get when you try and cancel your Internet subscription with Telefónica, you’ll know that we are not exaggerating about this.

On a similar note, we have had five complaints over the last few days about Telefónica technicians turning up at clients’ homes out of the blue, saying they have to make some changes to the line. Once the changes are done, the client is told that they now have a new phone number. This seems to be a way of prolonging the client’s contract with Telefónica so they will not be able to switch over to another telephone operator when the time comes.

If this has happened to you, call Telefonica’s 1004 helpline and say that you want your old number back or you will go to the police. We are told that this has been successful in getting the operation reversed.

We believe that Telefónica are getting ready for the big hit they are going to take towards the end of this year, when companies such as Direct Telecom will be able to take over the line rental from them, and are doing whatever they can to try and prevent this. As they are about to lose the battle to retain their monopoly, Telefónica are resorting to fighting dirtier than ever. But forewarned is fore-armed, so please let your friends and family know about these tricks so they do not fall for the scams.

Thousands sign up for our Low-Cost Mobile Call Service in just over 2 months

Monday, May 12th, 2008

Literally thousands of people have signed up for our Mobile Call-Through Service since we launched it just over 2 months ago. The incredible success of this service, which allows you to make very low-cost international calls from your Spanish mobile phone, is hardly surprising when you consider that just about everyone in Spain owns a mobile and that not everyone can wait to get back home to make a low-cost call from their landline.

In a nutshell, the way this service works is that you use your mobile operator’s preferential calling rate (such as ‘favourite numbers’ or ‘friends and family’ packages) to contact Direct Telecom’s system from your mobile phone, and this allows you to access our Low Cost Overseas Calls service at the same prices we offer to our landline clients. In other words, you can enjoy the convenience of Direct Telecom’s rock-bottom international call rates (PDF) while on the move, from wherever you are in Spain, with just a tiny overhead (typically a couple of cents a minute) that you pay your mobile operator for the call to us.

“The success of this service is due to the high demand for consumers to drastically reduce the costs of communicating from their mobile phone, combined with the easy-to-use, high quality service we offer,” says Mike Broeckaert, Direct Telecom’s Commercial Director. Mike adds, “We are constantly working to find new communications solutions, which drastically save our clients money without jeopardizing quality.”

Save still more with BT Mobile from Direct Telecom
As another example of Direct Telecom’s commitment to bringing our clients the best prices, we have recently teamed up with British Telecom to distribute the new BT Mobile service in Spain. Spanish mobile phone users finally have a real, cost-effective alternative to the exorbitant mobile call rates they have had to pay over the years.

Everyone knows that the big mobile phone operators in Spain spend ludicrous amounts of money on colossal advertising campaigns – for example Vodafone spends millions of Euros a year on Formula 1 sponsorships alone. It goes without saying whose pocket all that money ultimately comes from, and it is no surprise that mobile phone calls have always been so expensive until now.

On the other hand, BT España has chosen the prudent route, preferring to pass on the savings to its clients – just one of the many reasons why it makes so much sense to switch to BT in Spain.

NEW Service! Make Low Cost Calls from your MOBILE!

DIRECT TELECOM INTRODUCE
INTERNATIONAL MOBILE SERVICES!!

Low cost calls from Spanish Mobiles

Save thousands a year with Direct Telecom (Mobile).
From March 1st you will be able to call most of Europe and the World from your mobile from an amazing 3.3 cents per minute.  CEO, Barrie Wainwright, states “The company has been inundated for years with requests to break the monopoly of Vodafone/Movistar/Orange etc, and, at last, with much research and thanks to the technical department of Direct Telecom, we have cracked it.  This is not some unrealistic Mickey Mouse service and hype.  It seriously works – quickly and efficiently.”
“Originally, mainly businesses requested the service, but now almost everyone is spending absolute fortunes per month using their mobile phones,” says Barrie.
“The system works simply and efficiently by directing your call from your provider to Direct Telecom (mobile) systems platform, and you get an instant connection.  In all cases there will be a minimum charge by your own provider, but even with that in mind the rates remain spectacularly low.  You can sign up and top up online, and be activated within minutes, with easy, no-fuss systems for all.  Another great saving is that there are no connection charges for follow-up calls.”
Imagine being anywhere in Spain and being able to phone the UK or other international destinations for only 3.3 c/min plus your local call charge. “This is an amazing opportunity for all to save hundreds of Euro a year, especially businessmen and women on the move,” says Barrie. “Don’t forget Direct Telecom’s motto – Communication for Life,” he adds. “This means we can bundle any combination of services for our clients; low cost calls, low cost mobile calls, ADSL with VoIP, the fantastic Fritz!Box router with live UK TV streaming, and we are now distributors for BT’s new mobile phone service.”

Direct Telecom has done it once again!

Monday, August 27th, 2007

Due to the high demand of many of our thousands of clients, Direct Telecom has developed a service that will simply make life easier and especially satisfy clients who are constantly on the move and particularly the ‘swallows’.
The service in question is essentially a “call divert feature” that will automatically divert the calls you receive on your normal landline at home to an external number of your choice and simultaneously benefit from Direct Telecom’s extra Low Cost VoIP rates.  This service is in fact already available to all Direct Telecom’s ADSL clients as it is an imbedded feature of our ADSL Internet equipment.  Whereas Telefónica will charge you their standard international rates plus the connection charge to divert a call, with Direct Telecom’s ADSL & call divert feature, you will not be charged for the call connection charge and the price for the call divert to your mobile or UK landline will be charged at very low VoIP rates!
For example, if you are back in the UK for a few days, or 3 months, you can set your ADSL Router to divert all the calls over VoIP to your UK landline or mobile.  As far as the caller is concerned, they are not even aware that you are away as you will be able to take the call from your UK phone as if you were in Spain.
The only cost involved for you is the VoIP call from your home to the telephone number you have chosen.  If you decide to divert the call to your UK landline, the call would cost you only 2.6 cts/min or even 1.48 cts/min if you contract the “VoIP Smart” call plan.  This is undoubtedly the best way to stay in contact while you are away, and can be particularly interesting for businesses or individuals working from home….no one needs to know you are not in your office!
If you do not yet have Direct Telecom’s ADSL Broadband with this feature packed equipment and service, then this is an excellent reason to get it now!

Direct Telecom is growing, and is doing so at a faster rate than was initially expected thanks to our solid client fidelity and service recommendations.  Although many telecoms companies are struggling and suffering from competition with never ending price cuts, Direct Telecom’s expansion programme aims to double the existing client data base by the end of the year, and is already ahead of its target.

Are you being overcharged?

Monday, April 16th, 2007

Have you ever looked at your telephone bill from Telefonica and wondered if they had made a big mistake? ‘How can it be so high?’ you think. Then you call them or do the math yourself only to find out that not only is the bill ludicrously high, but absolutely correct too. Sad indeed!

So, exactly how much are you being overcharged each month on your phone calls and Internet?  At Direct Telecom, we can tell you to the cent!

Just show us a recent Telefonica bill and we will work out how much you would have saved if you had made those very same calls and/or accessed the Internet through Direct Telecom’s services. All you have to do is post us a photocopy of your latest Telefonica bill together with your contact details to

Direct Telecom
Edificio Eden Nº 101,
Los Cristianos, 38650
Tenerife, Spain

or fax it to us on 922 797 511 (or even bring it over to our offices). We’ll take care of the rest. And what’s more, we’ll also check your bill for any unnecessary services you may be paying for but not using – an all too common occurrence! This ‘Are you being overcharged?’ service is FREE and using it places you under no obligation to sign up with us.

However, prepare to be pleasantly surprised when you find out how much money you could be saving each month on your phone and Internet services with Direct Telecom. Maybe it’s the cost of a nice evening at the cinema… or a meal for two at your favourite restaurant… What if it’s more?

Once you have exact savings figures based on your own Telefonica bill, making the switch to Direct Telecom won’t be just a no-brainer. It will also be the smartest thing you could do!

Yet another reason to join Direct Telecom as Telefónica raises rates in March 2007!

Thursday, February 1st, 2007

As usual, news from Telefónica never seems to be as favourable for the consumer as we would like it to be.  Early on in January, the Telecom’s giant announced that their general rates will be increased by 3.7% and will affect over 11 million users all over the country.  This raise will increase the cost of the monthly line rental fee for all owners of a Telefónica landline by 2% increase, and all national call rates will be increased by 3.7%. It seems only clients with certain contract conditions and additional calling plans may be unaffected, but I wonder what the chances are in qualifying!
It is now a better time than ever to join Direct Telecom.  Before the increase in rates, our clients were already saving over 80% in comparison with Telefónicas rates.  Our rates remain unaffected so imagine how much more you can save now!

According to Telefónica, they can justify the increase in rates because the CMT (Comisión del Mercado de las Telecomunicaciones) has recently forced them to drastically drop the prices of the ADSL services that are sold on to the ISP’s (Internet Service Providers) in Spain.  Telefónica claims that this is a way of making up for the money they will loose by dropping the ADSL reseller prices.

Direct Telecom’s ADSL service has proved to be a total success. Our aim is to provide quality communication services to our clients at a reduced price and this is why we are keeping a close eye on the evolution of this expected drop in ADSL prices to make sure that our clients will be the first to see the benefits.
